A Flash of Red presented by artist Jean Dennis

  • 25 Apr 2022
  • 8 May 2022
  • The Calyx, The Royal Botanic Garden, Mrs Macquaries Road, Sydney

The title of this exhibition featuring the genus Brachychiton refers to the artist’s first sighting of a red flower in otherwise dry brown bush in the Northern Territory.

Featuring life-sized watercolours of parts of trees and shrubs of the indigenous Brachychiton genus, these works are part of a significant collection of paintings of this little known genus. Painted from living specimens over a thirteen year period the majority of specimens were collected by the artist from their natural habitats.
The scientifically correct paintings were executed with the general public in mind and include the details needed for the identification of each species as seen with the naked eye.

Jean painted with the botanical illustrators group at the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne for 24 years, before moving to New South Wales in 2016. She has taught botanical illustration for over 25 years and has exhibited regularly with the Friends of the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne, and has exhibited widely

Jean aspires to exhibit the Brachychiton collection in all states to show an aspect of beautiful Australian flora long ignored but worthy of inclusion as a significant genus in its own right
