Susan Hoy

Hello! Having had a full career teaching Mathematics to senior students, I have now moved on, enjoying the creation of Botanical Illustrations. It was a revelation to find an area of art that I could fully immerse myself in after many years of playing after work hours with all sorts of mediums and themes. I love the research and precision required to create each piece and it feels for me like a natural progression from Mathematics to this type of work. I originally took some courses with Leonie Norton and loved this so much that I went on to do an online course with Dianne Sutherland in the UK. I then completed the Certificate and Diploma in Botanical Illustration (online) with the Royal Botanic Garden in Edinburgh. For the Diploma I was thrilled and surprised to be awarded the Eve Reid Bennett Prize. I now work as a freelance tutor in Botanical Illustration with RBGEdinburgh.

I currently work in graphite, coloured pencil, watercolour and ink. I would really like to explore using oils for Botanical Illustration.

I feel really grateful to be doing two things that I love; helping students and quietly observing and recording our beautiful Australian plants, especially those of my local area, the Tweed Shire of the Northern Rivers region of NSW. It is wonderful when an illustration of a plant travels out into the world and its lovely characteristics and importance in our environment becomes the focus.
